A team of elite US Navy SEALs is called when an undercover CIA agent by the name of Lisa Morales is kidnapped, and almost beat to death. The team of guys responsible for the kidnapping end up correlating to two men who construct a devastating plan to rebel against America, by means of terrorism. Once again, the SEALs are brought in to attempt to neutralize the enemies.
The main thing Act of Valor has going for it is the fact that the film stars real life U.S Navy SEALs. This also happens to be one of the films many flaws. I understand that these people are not actors, but i'm not going to let the film off the hook for such awful acting just because these people aren't actors. It's just a gimmick that was used to sell the film. The acting in the film really is terrible and some of the lines are delivered so poorly that you can't even understand what they are saying. The plot for the film is incredibly thin and is only there to set up the action scenes to show these SEALs doing what they do in the line of duty. These sequences are at first mildly amusing to watch, but they quickly just become generic shootout scenes that overuse the first person view point way too much and it becomes annoying very fast. It felt like I was just watching someone play Call of Duty. Speaking of Call of Duty, it almost seems that every action scene in this film was ripped off from a level of Call of Duty. Another problem with this film is that for a film that's selling point is trying to show us the lives of these men who are in active duty, yet the film never at any time attempts to develop these characters. They arelifelessthey come and this becomes even more of a flaw in the moments where the movie tries to have emotional moments that come off moreforced and cliché that emotional. What really disappointed me was the fact that the film never touches on what war is like for these guys and there feelings about it, or why the feel the need to fight for their country. This film is also very boring since there is almost no plot and the action sequences are so run of the mill. At times, it felt like I was just watching a recruitment ad for the army. Save your money and time and just play Call of Duty.
I love war movies. The Great Escape. A Bridge Too Far. The Hurt Locker. All rank in my Top 20 greatest titles, encompassing all genres. <br/><br/>Accordingly, I was intrigued to see Act of Valor. Slow to get going, over-long and lacking any real intrigue or surprises, it doesn't deserve to be mentioned in the same paragraphthe above. <br/><br/>The true test of any film is the strength of its characters and Act of Valor's makers don't even try to create any. The good guys are presentedinterchangeable avatars of family and patriotism; the bad guys belong in a discarded first draft of an unmade NCIS episode. I was never made to care about any of them and so remained uninvolved in the story. This isn't a video game, it's a movie; characters matter. <br/><br/>Not to be unkind, but I'm not sure that the cast could have done much with a better script. For an action movie, there are an awful lot of "dramatic" scenes where the guys take golden hour walks and talk about their families. Casting real soldiers for action scenes is one thing, but to ask them to carry a movie and take an audience with them seems like hubris. <br/><br/>As to the much-vaunted action, there was really only one sequence - a hostage rescue that set the drama in motion - that had me sitting up in my seat. That was well shot and edited and was the high point of an otherwise slow and pedestrian narrative. The other action sequences were nothing that I haven't seen before.<br/><br/>To summarize: real soldiers, real hardware, poor script, bad acting, one good action sequence and a bunch of indifferent ones. <br/><br/>Whether you spend your dollars on admission is up to you. The preview audience with which I watched it was quiet throughout and gave only cursory applause at the end. I'll never get those almost two hours back, but at least I didn't pay to see it.

Yes, they are. They are not named in the film's credits, however. Yes. Christo is based on Viktor Bout, a notorious Russian billionaire currently awaiting trial in the US for black market arms dealing. Like Christo he enjoyed an immensely lavish lifestyle, ran his own fleet of smuggling planes, skilfully circumvented international law and ruthlessly sold to the highest bidder. He also inspired Nicholas Cage's film Lord of War. Abu Shabal is based on Shamil Basayev, Chechen terrorist leader and Jihadi who amongst other atrocities was responsible for the 2004 Beslan School massacre. Like Shabal he advocated the indiscriminate mass killing of civilians using explosive vests and utilised the wives of his dead fighterssuicide bombers, nicknaming them "Black Widows". He was killed in 2006 by an explosion during an arms deal, possibly assassinated by the Russian secret service. The Rocket-Propelled Grenade (RPG-7) is expelled from the launch tube by a primary charge and then carried towards the target by a rocket motor. However, the rocket motor doesn't initiate and the armour piercing warhead doesn't arm until it is some distance from the launcher so that the firer isn't killed by the backblast or a premature detonation. When the SEAL is struck by the warhead he is so close to the firer that the rocket motor hasn't kicked in yet and the warhead hasn't had time to arm so his body armour is able to save him. The SEALs not only rescued Morales but were able to recover the Blackberry phone belonging to Christo's henchman. This is a crucial plot pointthe information they recover from it leads them to the arms transfer in Somalia and Christo's yacht in the Pacific. Terrorists worldwide from the IRA to the Viet Cong to Al-Quaeda have a reputation for obsessively writing their plans down, the SEAL's killing of Osama bin Laden was not nearlyimportant in the War on Terrortheir recovery of his mobile phones, laptop computers etc which provided invaluable information on his organisation. Presumably it must have been surgically re-attached. Several alterations were made for the international cut of the movie: some of the footage was either cut out or re-dubbed for international markets which mitigates the movie's message. Sometimes there is the exact same dialogue happening during an entirely different shot. Mostly the offscreen comments were changed but there are also five altered scenes resulting in a time difference of almost 1 minute between both versions.
